week 4 eoc: women in advertising

women in the advertising and in the ads back in the day were treated like lower class citizens.women in the work place had no say and when they did it was looked down upon. getting equal opportunity in the work place for women was an up hill battle and still today we ares till not taken completely seriously.but women in the ads was at the same low point if not worse back in the day but over time it became better and ads showed women being respected but lately women in ads have been on the down fall again. some ads with or towards women are completely disrespectful not only towered women, but women are willing to be seen this way by the public eye.  "While the flirtatious flight attendants were grounded years ago and the stereotypical housewife ads have been put out with the trash, women, in many cases, are still portrayed simply as sex objects."

week 3 eoc: tobacco advertisement

the ethics shown or not shown in this ad of santa smoking are very poor.were do even start with this ad well lets start with the fact that they have santa smoking knowing very well thatsanta is a huge child figure. kids look up to him, in aolt of way someone can see this as a ads aimed at kids at least thats how we would see this now a days and like most ads from the 50s and 60s this ad would never fly now. and because the tobacco companys will do anything to sell their product this is what the FDA did to help.

"Limit color and design of packaging and advertisements, including audio-visual advertisements.
Ban tobacco product sponsorship of sporting or entertainment events under the brand name of cigarettes or smokeless tobacco.
Ban free samples of cigarettes and brand-name non-tobacco promotional items."

eoc week 2:Examples of Questionable Ethics

Van Heusen (1960s)Chase & Sanborn (1950s)

let me start with “We are given a voice, and we have to be responsible in how we use that voice” (textbook page # 13)  There is something these three ads have in common, and thats poor ethics. If you look closely at them its not hard to find whats ehticly wrong with these ads.For instince the first one, shows a woman bent over on the mans bended knee as if he is going to punish her and the line implines if he find out shes buying the wrong coffie she will be in big trouble.ok well that should have never been an ad let alone relesed to the public, hitting a women is not ok and to tell the public, this is what will happen if you dont buy the right coffie is crazy. In the second ad it shows the women sevinge her husband on her knees and the headline states show her its a mans world,as we all know its not a mans world and talking down to a woman is never the way to go so the fact that all of these poor ethical choices are all in one ad makes it worse. And for the theird one, need it be said that this ad has so many things wrong with it its really unbealiveable and needs no say on why this is unethical.but now a days "Advertising and ethics can coexist."(textbook page # 13)

eoc week one: my voice

My name is Shelby I am an illustrator with a passion for advertising. As an illustrator I love to put emotion and a story on a page but I found myself getting frustrated because there were never enough mediums to express how I felt about what I was drawing. That’s when I found advertising. Advertising is what some see as wasted time on the T.V or a pop up on their computer. I see it as a way to get to know people and tap in to their emotions and make them feel or see things in a different way. Getting to push a product to a certain age group or class intrigues me and satisfies my needs to always be learning something new. Coming to the Art Institute I hope to advance my skills and learn the ins and outs of my trait. In Advertising I can put music, a story and a message in to 3 minutes and change someone’s life forever. No one ever put money down for something they know nothing about and that’s what an ad does it gives you info and shows you what it looks like and what you could look like in it, with it or wearing it.

week one boc: vw lemon

The Volkswagen bug, my not seem like much, but it’s because of this car that advertising is what it is today. William Bernbach was the brains behind the famous lemon ad. At the time Americans were skeptical about a German made car. However the lemon ad played on the cars strengths. The ad was a black and white picture of the Volkswagen bug with a bold faced caption that described the car as a “lemon”. This was bazaar for the dealer to call their own car a lemon; however this intrigued the reader to continue reading the ad. This entailed that the car had a small scratch on the glove box, telling the readers that Volkswagen would sell nothing less then perfect.
